These are just a couple of misconceptions about vaping. This article will discuss seven of the most common vaping myths and clear the air once and for all.
Vaping Causes Popcorn Lung: Not True
Diacetyl, the chemical behind popcorn lung, is found in tiny concentrations in some e-liquid flavorings, however, there has never been a reported case of popcorn lung associated with vaping. This chemical is also found in similar concentrations in tobacco smoke, and takes constant exposure to enormous amounts in order to develop the disease. It is hallmark of factory workers who work with the chemical.
Myth: Vaping Causes Wet Lung
Vaping does not directly cause wet lung. This is a half-myth. The one case study available that links wet lung to vaping, was of a young woman in rural Pennsylvania, who left an allergic reaction to e-liquid ingredients untreated. Upon the worsening of her symptoms, she was then admitted to the hospital and developed wet lung while under care. Allergic reactions are possible, and you should stop vaping and see your doctor immediately if you experience any unpleasant effects from vaping.
Vaping Is Just As Bad As Smoking… Not Likely
Cigarettes are made up of thousands of toxic and cancerous chemicals, such as tar, carbon monoxide and DDT. The more you smoke, the more you ingest into your system and will cause lots of long-term damage to your body.
On the other hand, there are much fewer harmful ingredients in vape liquid. It’s made of water, flavorings, PG or VG and glycerine. None of these are toxic.
Myth: Vaping Is More Addictive Than Cigarettes
Vaping allows total control over the amount of nicotine you can ingest. There is also the option to vape nicotine-free. This is one of the reasons why non-smokers like to vape because they can enjoy the experience without risking addiction, but I still wouldn’t recommend a non-smoker to start vaping.
There are also other ingredients within the many thousands found in a cigarette that contain addictive properties. Since some e-liquids only contain four main ingredients (water, flavorings, PG or VG and glycerine), there are no further addictive chemicals.
Vapes Are Not Regulated, But They Are
Again, this is a myth. In the US, vaping is regulated at both the Federal and State Law levels. In fact, the FDA extended its regulatory power in to include e-cigarettes in 2016, under which they can evaluate certain issues, including ingredients, product features and health risks, as well their appeal to minors and non-users.
They are also regulated heavily abroad. For example, in the UK, they have some of the toughest laws against smoking and vaping in the entire world. Like the US, their smoking regulations were also extended to cover vaping in 2016, with their laws defining minimum standards all e-cigs must follow in order to be sold.
Myth: E-Cigarettes Contain Antifreeze
Another vaping myth. The main reason why this exists is that people sometimes associate antifreeze with propylene glycol (PG). While this ingredient can be used in antifreeze, it’s only ever added to prevent toxic damage to anyone that may accidentally ingest it into the body.
The chemical that is actually used as antifreeze is called ethylene glycol (EG). While similar in name, they are totally different in terms of danger. EG causes far more serious problems that PG if it gets in the body.
Vaping Costs More Than Smoking? That’s A Myth.
This is certainly a misconception about vaping. Over a lifetime of smoking, you will spend thousands and thousands of dollars. However, vaping costs a fraction of the price and is proven to be healthier than smoking. The amount you save can even be enough to spend on a vacation abroad or even a new car.
Compared to smoking, vaping is better for your health, less addictive, regulated and cheaper. Oh, and just to make it clear again, it doesn’t contain antifreeze either.
